Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center to commemorate 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War

FHCC to honor more than 8,600 Vietnam Veterans enrolled for care

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. – The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) will honor Vietnam War Veterans with a special commemoration March 29 at the federal health care center in North Chicago, Ill.

Lovell FHCC is the nation’s only federal health care center. It integrates health care services of the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense to care for military members and their families, military retirees and Veterans in Northeast Illinois and Southeast Wisconsin.

The FHCC, VA, Department of Defense and thousands of other organizations across the country are joining together in the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration to honor Vietnam Veterans throughout 2016, to mark the 50th anniversary of the war.

“We are honored to participate in this historic commemoration for Vietnam Veterans and show them our sincere gratitude for their service and sacrifices,” said Lovell FHCC Director Dr. Stephen Holt. “We have more than 8,600 Vietnam Veterans enrolled for care at Lovell FHCC, and we thank each and every one. We are privileged to serve them.”

VA Secretary Robert McDonald designated March 29 as a day, “for our department to express our tremendous gratitude and support to this generation of Americans through ceremonies across the nation.

“Our Nation’s Vietnam War Commemoration is a long-overdue opportunity for all Americans to recognize, honor, and thank our Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifices during one of America’s longest wars,” McDonald said in a statement to kick-off the VA’s participation.

Prominent local Vietnam War Veterans – Medal of Honor recipient Allen J. Lynch and Retired Army Maj. Gen. James Mukoyama – will be guest speakers at the Lovell FHCC ceremony, which will be at 10:30 in Bourke Hall, Bldg. 4, on the main campus, 3001 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, Ill. Please follow the event signs to Parking Lot T, and then it is a short walk to Bourke Hall. Mukoyama and Lynch co-chair the Lovell FHCC Patient Advisory Council.

Lynch was an Army radio operator in Company D, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Calvary Division (Airmobile) in the central highlands of Vietnam on Dec. 15, 1967, the day he rescued and carried three wounded soldiers to safety. He then single-handedly defended them for hours against an enemy attack.
