Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center
Walk-in Center for Homeless Veterans opening Nov. 4
October 31, 2013
Lovell FHCC’s new Walk-In Center for Homeless Veterans will be open three days a week at the main hospital in North Chicago, Ill., to provide homeless veterans immediate help with resources and information, including emergency housing.
An open house at the walk-in center will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on opening day, Nov. 4.
Social workers at the walk-in center will help homeless veterans – and those at risk of becoming homeless – learn about housing options offered through several federal grant programs, as well as resources at Lovell FHCC and in the community. Homeless programs at Lovell FHCC are an integral part of health care, as the Department of Veterans Affairs strives to eradicate homelessness among veterans. FHCC homeless program staff members assist veterans with homelessness prevention services as well as with emergency, transitional and permanent housing options. They also assist veterans with establishing comprehensive care plans (medical, mental health, substance abuse treatment) at Lovell FHCC.
Social workers on duty in the center will assist with housing referrals, advocacy, crisis prevention, safety planning, transportation information, housing information, budgeting assistance and brief supportive counseling. The Walk-In Center for Homeless Veterans will be open from 1 to 4 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Building 133, Room 1D 121, at Lovell FHCC, 3001 Green Bay Road, North Chicago. Volunteers at the main valet parking entrance to the hospital are available to guide veterans to the center. During operating hours, walk-in center staff can be reached at 224-610-1148. Outside operating hours, veterans may call 224-588-0009 for assistance.
